Good hand selection is one of the most common mistakes made by beginner players, who too often chose to play a larger range of hands than they should. But the truth is, playing poker like this is the best way to loose on the long run. So let’s start by identifying which hands are the best to play in which position.
Each hand you are dealt, is part of a 6 specific category :
These four hands, and only these four hands, are the premium ones.
These are the good hands…
The potentially good cards, are what we also call suited connectors. They are 2 cards of the same suit, in a sequential numerical order. But they stop being potentially good from the 7 downwards.
The speculative hands, are the ones that look good, but are usually more difficult than what they seem. They can be specifically difficult to play. We’ll come back to these later.
The small pocket pairs are all the ones from the pair of twos up to the pair of tens.
And the trash hands are all the others. They are the hands you should almost never play.
What this probability demonstrates is that in an early position (when you are within the first to speak) you should only play the premium hands, because the probability of other players having better hands is 3 times out of 10. And that probability is just too high to play around with! The more players left to speak behind you, the more chances there are that someone might have a better hand than you.
